The Moment I Learned To Leave My Body

Content note: childhood trauma, parental alcoholism, dissociation.

I was six and my sister was four. A huge thunderstorm was hitting, and our dad was passed out drunk upstairs. We tried to wake him and couldn't.

That's when I learned I could leave my body so I didn't have to feel it. That was dissociation, and it's how the first chapter of my new book opens.

Some survival skills get learned way too early.
